RINGWOOD BREWERY PERFORMANCE PONY COMPETITION 2009

Scottish teenager Claudia Claydon has been knocking on the door in this competition for the last two years with her pony Chyvounder Rock n Roll, and this year she has made it her own with a resounding victory by a margin of just under 200 points.  Claudia and ‘Rocky’ who was bred in Cornwall, win the Golden Gorse Cup for the most points gained and the Merrie Cup for Owner Ridden.  The pair won the Junior Prize for the third year running and will be awarded a replica tumbler for this achievement.  They also win the Toby Versatility Tankard for their achievements across a varied number of disciplines, including side saddle, M&M and plaited WHP, combined training, ODEs and hunter trials, and show jumping.  An active member of the Duke of Buccleuch Pony Club, the pair has now stepped up to affiliated dressage and were reserve members of the Scottish dressage team.

In second place from Lancashire was first-time entrant, the talented stallion Furzley Charaide, owned by Cath Harrison and ridden by Hannah Carrick.  He wins the Knightwood Salver for the most versatile stallion, and both the Dressage and WHP Tankards. He competes in affiliated dressage to elementary level, and at the NPS summer championships he was reserve champion in the Open M&M WHP final and champion in the Native Breeds WHP final.  In third place, New Forest-based Jane Cleal and Farriers Brown Bear, who won the BHS Open Cross Country Championship, retain the Showjumping Cup.  A 22-year-old Forest-bred pony from the Isle of Wight, Obermill Copper Lad ridden by Jennifer Attrill shows how well Foresters can keep going, and gained overall fourth place.

Two ponies bred in Yorkshire by Diane and Paul Hadwen, both sired by their late stallion, Fijal Maestro, took fifth and sixth places.  Highfox Hosanna, owned by Alison Pink from Buckinghamshire, is a driving pony, gaining points in pre-novice cones and dressage as well as the more traditional pleasure driving and concours d’elegance classes, and took the Out of Town Trophy for the best driving over the other driving specialist Leith Maestro in eighth place.  Young Philippa Hadwen rode her home-bred pony Highfox Finale for a second year in this competition and moved up a couple of places in the rankings and also took the Lomondside Trophy for the best owner/breeder.  Veteran campaigner in this competition, Gail Brownrigg from Surrey, took the final two places with her two home-bred ponies, the stallion Leith Limelight, and driving pony Leith Maestro.
