THE NEW FOREST PONY STUD BOOK
The New Forest Pony Stud Book has three sections.
The requirements for entry into the applicable section of the Stud Book are as follows:
A Section - Approved Register.
A pony is eligible for entry if its sire and dam are entered in the Stud Book, and provided that in
all cases the pony is neither piebald, skewbald, spotted (appaloosa), or blue eyed cream (for the purposes of entry into the approved section of the Stud Book a pony shall not have any white markings on pink skin behind the head, above a horizontal line level with the bony protuberance
of the accessory carpal bone at the back of the knee in the forelimb, and the point of the hock in the hind limb. The pony must not exceed the maximum height for the breed (148cms). All ponies must be open to inspection and blood/DNA typing, and photographs may be required showing front, back and both sides of pony. Dark-eyed palominos with white manes and tails, and cream (very light chestnuts) are not eligible as licensed Stallions.
No foal can be entered unless the sire has been entered and licensed. This licensing will normally be done at two years and again at five years old, except in exceptional circumstances when the decision of the Council shall be final. All stallions must be blood/DNA typed at their first inspection. Stud stallion owners must make a return of all mares served. No foal may be entered into the Stud Book until this return or a covering certificate is received, excluding forest run foals.
Females that fit the above criteria will go straight into the Approved Section.
Male foals forward enough to be gelded early, on production of a Vets certificate,
can be entered at first registration straight into the Approved Section as geldings.
Y Section - Youngstock Register
Male foals that fit the Approved Section criteria will go into the Youngstock Section and will need their papers updating at two to three years i.e. when they are either licensed as a stallion or gelded. They will then be entered into the Approved Section. Gelding earlier will also qualify the pony for the Approved Section on production of a signed certificate from the attending vet.
X Section - Non-Approved Register
This section is open to ponies whose sire and dam are registered in the stud book but do not fit the criteria for the Approved Section and have been notified to the Society within the correct timescale i.e. within the calendar year of birth. Examples of ponies would be those with too much white, those that grow too big or stock by unlicensed stallions etc. Such ponies are not eligible to be shown in registered New Forest pony classes.
The ponies registered in sections A and Y have all the status of fully registered ponies. Those in
the X Section are not eligible to compete as New Forest or Mountain and Moorland competitions
and are not recommended for breeding, the progeny of X section ponies will not be accepted for the A Section of the Stud Book, so it will not be possible to breed up from them.
