“Bred by Carol Lovell and affectionately known to many as ‘Super Snail’, he is now owned by Sienna Chase and together they are forging an exciting new partnership. Their confidence has grown with every outing, resulting in three consecutive victories: the 90cm showjumping at Crofton Manor, the 90cm showjumping at Wellington, and their first Eventers Challenge at Lycroft. They also enjoyed an excellent Sunshine Tour Championships 2025, finishing in the placings in three of their four championship showjumping classes. Sienna and Snail train weekly in both dressage and showjumping, continually developing their partnership and broadening Snail’s already impressive skill set. They are also active members of the Hambledon Hunt North Pony Club, enjoying a wide variety of activities together, and with their confidence continuing to grow, they intend to affiliate in the near future.”

“Long before discovering success in the showjumping arena, Snail had already established an impressive reputation on the racecourse…lovingly owned, produced and campaigned by Erika Dovey, he enjoyed a distinguished pony racing career. Alongside numerous wins and placings at Larkhill…recording victories on three separate occasions with Erika, he also enjoyed success with her sons Isaac and Sonny Lovell, becoming a familiar and respected name on the pony racing circuit.
His Boxing Day point-to-point record is especially impressive…over an eight-year period, Snail claimed victories in four different classes, highlighting not only his talent but also his remarkable longevity: 2015 – winner of the 14–16 Years Race, ridden by Libby Stevenson; 2018 – winner of the Veterans Race, ridden by Eric Dovey, who was 68 years old when the pair claimed their memorable victory; 2021 – winner of the 10–13 Years Race, ridden by Sonny Lovell, making it his third Boxing Day victory, with each success coming in a different class; 2023 – winner of the prestigious Open New Forest Ponies Race, ridden by Isaac Lovell.
Away from the racecourse, Snail has played an important role in traditional forest life. Before moving into the role of Lead Whip, he served as the Field Master’s horse for three seasons, carrying out the demanding responsibilities of leading the field with steadiness, reliability and impeccable manners. He then went on to serve as a Whip’s pony for a further three seasons, proving himself an invaluable and dependable partner in the hunting field. Throughout these six seasons, Snail displayed the calm temperament, courage and endurance required of a top-class hunting pony. He has also helped gather the New Forest’s semi-feral ponies during the annual drifts, further demonstrating the genuine all-round nature of the breed and his exceptional character.
Now, with Sienna, Snail has embraced a new challenge with the same enthusiasm that has defined his entire career. His seamless transition from pony racing to showjumping and Eventers Challenge competitions is a testament to his trainability, athletic ability and generous character. When he isn’t training or competing, Snail is happiest enjoying a quieter pace of life…and loves relaxed hacks across the beautiful open forest, beach rides, fun rides and, most of all, spending time with Sienna, where endless kisses and well-earned treats are never in short supply.
His affectionate nature has made him not only a successful competition pony, but also a much-loved member of the family. Warren Trail Layer has tackled every challenge with enthusiasm and heart and his story reflects the enduring qualities of the New Forest Pony…versatile, dependable, kind and a wonderful ambassador for the breed.
With Sienna continuing to develop his education through regular dressage and show jumping training, an exciting future in affiliated competition lies ahead. We look forward to following the next chapter for “Super Snail” and Sienna Chase.” Nicole Chase
